Do you think more people are involved in creating ideas and taking action on behalf of the community?
I think we have had more volunteers come forward to assist in our goals we have presented to the community. Our Bargain Shoppe is run totally by volunteers and many volunteers help out at the Cavalier Corner Youth Center. We could use more! Why does it make a difference? Obviously, the work gets done! And people feel more ownership of their town if they participate in its activities and projects.

I’m not sure about the “more” people being involved, because I’ve only lived in Tyndall for 2 1/2 years, so I’m not sure who all was involved in community volunteer work before the Leadership Plenty program, but I do feel the program helped to empower folks to move forward with their own leadership. For me (being over 60 years old) much of the material was ideas I’d heard in other leadership training programs, but having it repeated was helpful in motivating me to be involved. The program was also extremely helpful for me to get acquainted with other community minded folks and thus find openings for working together on the projects.

I have a question for Judy M. You had commented on the Murdo Blog and said you had an electronic board. We are thinking about getting one in Murdo and have some questions.
Who purchased the board?
Who pays for up keep and maintenance? Electrical?
We would like to work together with several organization in our community to get one, but still have a lot of questions.
If you could give me some insite on what works for your community that would be wonderful.
Thank you very much.

to Murdo - The electronic board was purchased by Rotary, who does the maintenance of the actual sign and signing up users who are charged a certain fee to use for 3 days or 10 days or whatever….the sign is changed by the bank personnel as the sign spans Main Street at the bank corner. I don’t know who pays for the electricity. Larger organizations are offered a rate if they use it alot. Chamber uses it to remind residents to shop in town and also to advertise Chamber events. We have a new “shop local” message each week.
One thing about our sign is that the actual electronic part is not that big and the message is usually chopped into sections and hard to read unless you are going slow or standing on the street. It is used moderately, but our most successful sign has been the “tire sign” which used to be rolled out into the middle of the street and a paper sign posted!!!!! It was free too ! ( It disappeared when the street was renovated.)

I have seen a few new faces helping with the implementation of these ideas and projects, but for the most part it has been STP (same ten people). Unfortunately I believe that things must get much worse for Tyndall before the majority will start to get involved.

I find it very interesting the new ideas which people have presented since the Study Circles and Leadership plenty classes have finished. They don’t what to be in charge of developing those ideas but by the ideas given, you realize that they have put alot of time into the thought process and some even have positive solutions. They just want someone else to take the lead to get it done.
